Maheshwar, or abode of Lord Mahesha is a historical town located near the banks of Narmada River in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This ancient town finds mention in historical Hindu relics as the capital of Maharaja Kartivarjun. Chiefly dedicated to Lord Shiva, the site was initially called Mahishamati and is now a famous pilgrimage destination for Hindus. Owing to its close proximity with Indore, Maheshwar has now emerged as a favored excursion destination for the tourists.

The site comprises of historical temples and massive forts from the bygone era that represents a discerning look through their architectural grandeur, intricately worked doorways and carved pendant balconies. The complex owes much of the credit for the architectural brilliance to the greatest queen of the Holkers Dynasty -Maharani Ahilya Bai. And avid lover of temple architecture, her reign was instrumental in the construction of these temples along with several other ones throughout the region.

Apart from its exquisite buildings, the town is also renowned for the Maheshwar sarees depicting unique design and style. Introduced by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, these sarees displays intricate work, Zari work and other floral designs making them famous throughout the country. Overall, the town emanates a charm of its own, with tranquilness and a calm, laid back approach apparent in various day to day activites- be it the Sadhus meditating on the banks of river Naramada, the commuter boats criss-crossing upon its tranquil water or the rows of poised women carrying brass pots down to the holy river. It is an interesting observance to see the activities of Maheshwar so intermingled with the Narmada River.

• The beautiful Riverfront or Ghats of the Life giving River Narmada are ideal for spending some time meditating or just reflecting upon the divine ambience.

• The sacred temples dotting its landscape like Kaleshwara, Ahileswara and Rajarajeswara temples.

• The archaeological site at Navdatoli is another place worth visiting at Maheshwar. Discovered in 1950, excavations in this site yielded pottery dating back to centuries.
