As the name suggests, Kanch Mandir is a temple built entirely from mirrors and glass. Built by the "Cotton King" Sir Hukamchand Seth in the 20th century, it is also known as the Seth Hukamchand Temple. Basically a Jain temple, the structure showcases splendid floor, pillars, walls, ceiling, and everything else adorned with glass. The site is now an object of fascination and interest for people who visit from all parts of the country.
Kanch Mandir stands today as the finest specimen of art & architecture, leaving the visitors spellbound with the architectural skills and imaginations from the bygone era. Thousands of mirrors with patterned ceramic tiles decorate the shrine, enhancing the charisma of the temple. Even the decorative articles and artwork inside the complex is crafted from glass like the Chinese lantern-type glass lamps, glass cut chandeliers and other articles.
The interiors consists of a mesmerizing ambience contains murals depicting around 50 Jain stories. These one of a kind murals on glass also depicts scenes of conversion to Jainism, 19th century court life and torture of sinners in the afterlife. Although Jainism teaches modesty and a healthy detachment from worldliness, these temples have grown in popularity owing to its splendid and showy display. Special 3D effects emerge from the colorful glass beads and raised sculpted figures, whereas the chief idol of Lord Mahavira is crafted from shimmering black onyx.
With its religious roots, social impact and never before seen architecture, the temple is highly frequented by both Jain pilgrimages and leisure tourists alike.
